LASER ACNE THERAPY

Laser acne therapy first became popular in 2003 after a study showed that cases of mild acne were improved after just one laser treatment. Laser treatment acne causes temporary heat damage to oil glands, which in theory will reduce the oil supply. Many dermatologists are offering treatments, such as the smoothbeam laser acne treatment. Also some doctors are performing laser surgery acne. LSR (laser surgery acne) is used to remove acne scars. It is also a relatively new treatment

Possible side effects of laser acne therapy

This therapy is new, and any long-term side effects are still unknown. Some people have claimed, however, that the laser burnt their skin unless they used a special cream beforehand. Others have criticized the treatment because the results were not worth the price. Many experts in the medical community believe laser acne therapy prematurely ages the skin and leaves the former acne sufferer with wrinkles. Some also believe that the more laser treatments you have, the greater the risk of developing skin cancer. Several new studies are currently being conducted.

Like most acne treatments, the response is personal and may be wonderful for some, yet ineffective for others. If nothing seems to be going right it may be worth a shot to try. However, be reminded that it may take up to three sessions before any results are evident. And after stopping acne laser treatment, the acne may return.

Since the laser can be harmful to the skin, those with sensitive skin may have redness for a while. If you do choose to go through with the acne laser treatment, make sure the person performing the treatment knows what they are doing and is fully trained with the machine.

If you are interested in pursuing this type of treatment make sure that your dermatologist has done it before and ask him what the typical results were. If you have not tried other methods of acne treatment, you should try other proven safe acne treatments first.

Alternative treatments - safer and better

With all new treatments, there are things to keep in mind. This is a new treatment, so the long term side effects, if any, are unknown. There are many in the medical community that believe laser acne therapy will damage the skin. In doing so, laser acne therapy may cause the skin to prematurely age, and make it more susceptible to skin cancers. Many believe it may be much more dangerous than tanning beds. Also, most insurance companies consider this treatment to be cosmetic, and won't cover the costs.

We strongly advise acne patients not to try this procedure. There is no reason for you to be a guinea pig when there are other treatments that are safe, effective, and proven to work.
